Loupe Film Co.

About

Loupe Film Co. was founded in San Francisco in 2014 on a simple bet: a studio built around a small, permanent crew who work together on every project produces more consistent work than assembling a new freelance team for each job. A decade later, the same seven people still shoot, grade, cut, and mix nearly everything the studio releases.

The studio’s slate spans narrative features, a documentary, and commercial and music video work for clients who found Loupe through the feature and documentary work rather than the other way around — a pattern the studio has come to rely on rather than fight. Cinematography, color grading, and post-production are also offered standalone to outside production companies, and account for roughly a third of the studio’s yearly bookings.

What hasn’t changed since 2014 is a preference for practical light over rigged light, and for a restrained camera and cutting style over one built to disguise a small budget. Loupe has stayed deliberately small — the studio turns down a meaningful number of inquiries every year rather than scale the crew beyond what still fits comfortably around one edit bay.
